Translanguaging Space Construction in Chinese EFL Students’ Collaborative English Culture Introduction Videos
内容摘要：
The study investigates how Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) students construct translanguaging space via multimodal orchestration in their collaborative English-language YouTube videos of introducing Chinese culture. By triangulating multimodal analysis of videos and students’ interview responses, the current research maps translanguaging space construction within and across modes and identifies four multimodal translanguaging space patterns: 1) within linguistic modes, 2) in the linguistic-audio modal interaction, 3) in the linguistic-spatial modal interaction and 4) in the linguistic-visual modal interaction. Meanwhile, designers’ understanding of modal affordances, their intents, and perceptions of the intended audience were found to influence students’ multimodal orchestration in translanguaging spaces. Digital multimodal composing (DMC) task provides EFL learners with opportunities to draw upon their expanded multimodal repertoire, creatively combine multiple modes for meaning making, and critically transcend the boundaries of languages and modalities. Pedagogical suggestions are provided regarding integrating DMC tasks (e.g., video making) into bi-/multilingual learning environments.

新西兰奥克兰大学教育与社会工作学院博士一年级全日制学生、教学助理，曾任香港城市大学英语学院高级研究助理和项目管理员。所合作研究已发表于以下期刊：International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching、Studies in Science Education、International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education、Sustainability。目前担任多家SSCI期刊匿名审稿人。
